August 1st. North
To South. We got up at 5:00 to go to Bright Angel Point to
see the sunrise. It was awe-inspiring. There were only about
a dozen people out there. I took video of the sun actually rising,
but I think that was a bust. Then I turned the camera and took about
a half an hour shot of the shadows falling down the canyons. With
some time laspse maneuvering, I hope that it will make a nice video.
Checked out and on the road by 8:30. It took about 5 hours to get
to the South Rim by way of Marble Canyon. After checking out some
of the Eastern vistas on the South Rim, I got checkinitis so we drove to
the El Tovar Hotel and checked in. It's a magnificant hotel in a
Grand Canyon way - it was built around 1909. Although it's nicely
renovated in the room, there are about 2 electrical outlets available -
one for our cooler, and one for the computer. I had to recharge the
camcorder's batteries in the bathroom!! We drove 4 miles out of the
park and ate at Wendy's for a treat. After that, the kids and Lesley
went to a campfire talk and to the Visitor Center while I did laundry.
Then computer work and getting the clothes all organized. Off for
a long hike tomorrow!
The next three pictures were taken on the road to Marble
Canyon.
The next two were taken at the Marble Canyon bridge
over the Colorado River. This is the point where you swing back towards
the South Rim after driving around the Grand Canyon. (there ain't
no big bridge straight across!).
We're entering the park. The rest are all pictures
taken from the various overlooks in the park along the way to the hotel.
Fini!
